There are nearly as many styles of running as there are runners. Some
techniques are extremely efficient while others no matter how hard they try
feel like they are expending disproportionate amounts of energy for the
distance covered and it is not all about body weight and leg length. Good
technique can be improved and less efficient running styles can be made more
efficient with a bit of well placed effort in the right areas.
We are now performing running assessments in the clinic. This involves gait
analysis - which is the study of human movement. Certain types of movements
have the potential to cause symptoms in the lower back, hips, knees, lower
legs and feet. There is a 'normal' position and quality of movement for all
joints in the body at any point during walking or running. Video gait analysis
enables evaluation of normal and abnormal movements of the joints of the lower
limbs as you move. It is an effective assessment tool where a physiotherapist
films you walking and running. This efficiently aids the diagnosis of any
misalignments or unusual movements during running and provides you with a
greater understanding as to why you are getting injured, and how to prevent it
from happening.
You will be observed and filmed initially on a treadmill and then given
feedback as to what we are seeing and where changes can be made. Learning to
retrain an aspect of your motor, muscle control, strength and flexibility can
make huge differences in improved efficiency and injury prevention. Most of
all from these sessions we aim to help you understand what you should be
feeling and what can be altered. Sessions can be tailored to your needs
depending on whether you want an injury diagnosis, injury prevention or
technique analysis.
We can also help you with your training programme. Customise it to help you
maximise your personal targets within your busy schedules and helping to avoid
the dreaded overtraining injuries.
These sessions are run by experienced Physiotherapists with a passion for
running and exercise, Mark Langley and Carol Taylor. Mark has an MSc in
Biomechanics (the science of human movement) and Carol is a Physiotherapist
with a wealth of experience in keeping runners running. Your session starts
with 5minutes of jogging going onto running and 10 minutes of analysis. Please
arrive early and remember to bring your running gear!
