World Cup and The Effect On Your Back

Sitting!!! Or lounging!!!

Whilst our footballer’s will be entertaining us with their sporting prowess, the rest of us will be sitting, standing or lounging, watching them, hour after hour. Whilst the footballers will be getting pains in their knees, ankles and groins, the supporters at home will be complaining of back and neck ache!

Why? . . . Posture!

At work there are guidelines to sitting at the workstation. How to protect the back during a long day at the desk. There are good supportive chairs, ergonomic desks and advice to get up and move.

But . . .

Get home from work, rush to the TV. Flop on the chair and stay until the game(s) are over. No thought of sitting up straight, supporting the back, getting up three times in the hour. No thought of having the TV screen directly in front and at a good height!
The result is, low back pain, ricked neck, sore shoulders.
Backs do not like to be in one position for long periods. Especially if it is an awkward position, lying on the sofa, twisting to one side, slumped in the chair, hunched on a bar stool!

Solutions;
  • Try and sit back in the chair with the back supported
  • Have the TV directly in front, not over to one side so that the neck is twisted to watch
  • Get up frequently
  • Get up and move around
  • When standing try to stand with the weight evenly distributed over both feet
Alter positions;
  • Try lying on the floor, face down resting the chin in the hands
  • Stand for short periods
